Other names for the Miniature Pinscher: The Miniature Pinscher is known by the nickname of the "Mini Pin" and the "King of the Toys". Other names for this breed of dog include the Min Pin, Zwergpinscher, Miniature Doberman Pinscher, Mini Doberman and Miniature Doberman.

Origin of the name: The German word Pinscher, also Pinsch, probably derives from the English word 'pinch' in reference to its "clipped" ears.

Miniature Pinscher History and Origin: The country of origin of the Miniature Pinscher breed was in Germany during the 1600's. The Miniature Pinscher was developed from the Dachshund, the Italian Greyhound, and the much larger shorthaired German Pinscher. The Miniature Pinscher also bears a significant resemblance to the Doberman Pinscher, because of its shared heritage. However, the Miniature Pinscher is the older of these two breeds, as it was not until the 1870's that Louis Dobermann (1834-1891) bred his first Doberman Pinscher.

The swift and sturdy Miniature Pinscher was originally used as a barnyard ratter, controlling the rats and mice found in the stables. The feisty Miniature Pinscher was never used as a lapdog, despite its diminutive size. The Miniature Pinscher was first exhibited at the Stuttgart Dog Show in Germany in 1900, and until that time they were almost unknown outside of that country. Shortly after the show the breed was taken to America and the Miniature Pinscher Club of America was formed and recognized by the  American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1925.

The original name for this breed in the United States was "Pinscher (Toy)" and this name 'stuck' until until 1972 when the name was officially changed to the Miniature Pinscher. The Miniature Pinscher was exported to the UK, in 1938, just before the outbreak of WW2 (1939 - 1945). The popularity of the Miniature Pinscher fell following the anti-German sentiments due to the war but the quality of the small breed shone through and the Miniature Pinscher is now featured in the Top 20 of the world's most dogs and is enjoyed as a lively family pet and watchdog.
