Other names for the Miniature Bull Terrier: The Miniature Bull Terrier is known by the nickname of the "Gladiator". Other names for this breed of dog include the Mini Bull Terrier, Bully and English Miniature Bull Terrier.

Origin of the name: The word 'Bull' is derived from its larger ancestors use as a 'bull baiter'. Bull baiting was a contest in which trained bulldogs attacked tethered bulls, a popular sporting event in England. (Bull baiting continued until it was eventually banned in 1835). Any dogs with the word 'Bull' in its name were originally used in Bull baiting. The origin of the word 'terrier' is derived from the Latin word 'terra' meaning "earth" as so many of the terrier breeds were originally bred and trained as hunting dogs to pursue small game, such as rats, mice and squirrels. These tenacious dogs were also used to hunt hogs in America.

Miniature Bull Terrier History and Origin: The country of origin of the Miniature Bull Terrier breed was in United Kingdom during the 1800's. The dog was bred as a fighting dog and a hunter. The Miniature Bull Terrier originated in England around 1850 as a miniature version of the Bull Terrier. The Miniature Bull Terrier was an ideal size to work as a ratter, controlling the numbers of vermin that infesting the building and waterways of England. The Miniature Bull Terrier was also known to be used in the blood sport called Rat-baiting (refer to the history of the Rat Terrier).

As time passed Rat-baiting was banned and the Miniature Bull Terrier returned to his role of an excellent ratter and small hunting dog. The Miniature Bull Terrier was exported to the United States by British immigrants eager to prosper from the employment opportunities offered by Industrialization.

Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Richard Hamilton Glyn (1907 – 1980) was a British army officer and an authority on breeding pedigree dogs. In 1937 he published "Bull Terriers and How to Breed Them". Sir Richard Glyn went on to found the English Miniature Bull Terrier Club in 1938, and in 1939 the English Kennel Club recognized the Miniature Bull Terrier as a unique breed. The most famous Miniature Bull Terrier was "Willie" the loyal and faithful dog of America's war commander General George S. Patton (1885 - 1945).  Although intensively disliking the sound of gunfire Willie valiantly rode at Patton's side through some of the worst battles in WW2.

Miniature Bull Terrier Modern History: The Miniature Bull Terrier was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1991. In more recent times a Bull Terrier called  "Chico" won the hearts of the nation as the pet dog of Craig, played by Ice Cube in the movies Next Friday (2000) and Friday After Next (2002).
