Origin of the name: The word 'Bull' is derived dog's larger ancestors who were used as  'bull baiters'. Any dogs with the word 'Bull' in its name were originally used, or descended from, dogs used in Bull baiting. The 'sport' of Bull baiting was a contest in which trained bulldogs attacked tethered bulls, a popular sporting event in England. (Bull baiting continued until it was eventually banned in 1835).  The origin of the word 'terrier' is derived from the Latin word 'terra' meaning "earth" as so many of the terrier breeds were originally bred and trained as hunting dogs to pursue their prey, such as rats, foxes, squirrels and badgers into their burrows and bolt holes.

Bull Terrier History and Origin: The country of origin of the Bull Terrier breed was in United Kingdom during the 1700's. Not only was this dog bred to hunt small game they were also used to track poachers and fugitives and as fighting dogs. The original Bulldog had proven to be too slow for dog fighting and in order to obtain greater speed of movement many of the Bulldogs were crossed with terriers and it was these cross breed dogs became known as Bull Terriers. The Bull Terrier was well known to be used in the blood sport called Rat-baiting (refer to the history of the Rat Terrier). But its story began when a dog dealer called James Hinks (1829-1878) bred white dogs (without the distinctive "egg-shaped" head, that he named the Bull Terrier.

The dog was referred to as the "White Cavalier" as James Hinks had developed his breed as a protector rather than an antagonist. The Hink's dog became popular and other breeders began producing new strains by crossbreeding the Bulldog with different types of terriers. These later Bull Terriers were deliberately developed in the 1800's to participate in the violent English blood sports involved in pit fighting.

The cross breeding combined the power, high threshold of pain and the tenacity of the Bulldog with the athleticism and agility of the terrier. The Bull Terrier gained a new nickname of the "Canine Gladiator" due to the dog's ability to fight to the death upon the orders of its master. The Bull Terrier was exported to the United States where its hunting abilities were used to hunt polecats. The Bull Terrier was the ancestor of the Miniature Bull Terrier. The Bull Terrier was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1885.
