Golden Retriever History: Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks, 1st Baron Tweedmouth (29 December 1820 – 4 March 1894), also known as the Laird of Guisachan and Glenaffric, is credited with developing the Golden Retriever at his Guisachan estate in the Scottish Highlands. In 1865 Lord Tweedmouth purchased a yellow retriever he called "Nous" from a litter of Wavy-Coated Retrievers and established a breeding program to develop a new breed of hunting dog. He crossed his rare 'Yellow Retriever' with the local but now-extinct Tweed Water Spaniel called 'Belle' which had a liver-coloured coat.
