The Goldendoodle, is characterized by its handsome, charming appearance with its alert, mischievous  expression. This "designer dog" hybrid breed exhibits the combination of characteristics, and a temperament mix, associated with the Golden Retriever and a Poodle. The goal of crossing the two breeds was to create a larger "doodle-type" dog producing 'Groodle' puppies that incorporated the energy and trainability of the Golden Retriever with the high intelligence and non-shedding coat of the Poodle.

The temperament of the Goldendoodle can be described as Active, Friendly, Loyal. The coat type of the Goldendoodle is described as varied coat type depending on hereditary traits in assorted colors.  Due to its characteristics and qualities, the Goldendoodle demonstrated the desired traits of a Watch dog, Companion and Pet dog and is known by its nick name the "Goldenpoo". Goldendoodle Dog Type - Hybrid / Mix (Unrecognised as a breed): Golden Retriever / Poodle: The Goldendoodle is one of the many types of dogs described as a Hybrid / Mix, bred from the Golden Retriever / Poodle. The hybrid Goldendoodle is currently recognized by the Designer Dogs Kennel Club (DDKC) and the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).

Origin of the name: The origin of the name "Goldendoodle" derives from a combination of the names of the dog's parents.

Goldendoodle History and Origin: The country of origin of the Goldendoodle breed was in United States and Australia during the 1980's. The lineage of the hybrid Goldendoodle is a combination of two dog breeds. The Poodle, the "Caniche", began as a water dog, specifically as a duck retriever, in Germany during the 1500's. The Golden Retriever, the "World's Most Popular Dog" was trained in England to pick up, or retrieve, small game or water fowl in the 1800's.  The Goldendoodle breeding program began on the heels of the earlier and highly popular Labradoodle and the Cockapoo. People loved the intelligence and low-shedding coats of the new Designer Dog breeds. It was therefore just a matter of time that the "World's Most Popular Dog", the Golden Retriever, was crossed with the super intelligent poodle.

Like the Labradoodle, another purpose of the hybrid Goldendoodle was to develop guide dogs suitable for visually impaired people who suffered with allergies. Dog breeders hoped to combine the trainability and high energy of the Golden Retriever with the low shedding coat and intellect of the Poodle. The standard sized Goldendoodle was an immediate success. Other breeding programs were developed using miniature and toy poodles creating a range of sizes of the popular Goldendoodle. The Goldendoodle can now be claimed as the most intelligent hybrid dog. Its parent, the super intelligent poodle, is ranked as number 2 in the smartest dogs list and the Golden Retriever is ranked as number 4 in the smartest dog list.

Goldendoodle Height: The Goldendoodle breed is classified as a Mini to Large sized dog. The original Goldendoodle was bred by crossing the Standard Poodle and the Golden Retriever. However since 1999 smaller sizes of the Goldendoodle have been bred having Miniature Poodle or Toy Poodle parents. The height to the shoulder of a medium male dog is 13 to 24 inches. The height to the shoulder of a female dog is slightly less.

Goldendoodle Weight: The weight of a Goldendoodle male dog is 30 - 45 lbs (Medium size). The weight of the smaller female dog is slightly less than the Goldendoodle male.

Goldendoodle Coat Type - LOW shedding coat: The coat type of the Goldendoodle is described as varied coat type depending on hereditary traits and can therefore be short or long  soft or silky hair that can be a loose wavy coat, a tighter more curly or shaggy coat or a straight coat..

Goldendoodle Coat Colors: The colors of the popular Goldendoodle hybrid consists of assorted colors most commonly consisting of champagne, golden, gray, cream copper, apricot, red, red & white.  N.B. The term "Red" refers to reddish shades of orange, brown, and tan colors.

Goldendoodle Grooming Needs: The grooming needs of the Goldendoodle is dependent on the type of coat it has inherited from its parents, either the Golden Retriever or the Poodle. The Golden Retriever has moderate grooming requirements whereas the Poodle has high grooming needs. The grooming needs and requirements of the Goldendoodle should include bathing the dog on a monthly basis and making regular checks of the teeth, nails, eyes and ears.
