Origin of the name Fila Brasileiro: The origin of the name "Fila Brasileiro" derives from the Portuguese word "fila" meaning 'to secure' or 'to hold' in reference to the dog being kept on a leash and chained up..

Fila Brasileiro History and Origin: The ancestors of the Dogue De Bordeaux are the massive, ferocious Molosser dogs  of antiquity and the, now extinct, Alaunt breed. The Portuguese explorers Vasco da Gama and Pedro Álvares Cabral discovered the coasts of Brazil and the Portuguese established colonies in the 'New World'. Portuguese colonists took their dogs with them that included the Rafeiro do Alentejo (Portuguese Mastiff), the Bloodhound and the Bulldog. The Fila Brasileiro was developed as a cross breed of these dogs. The Fila Brasileiro was used as a guard dog to protect large estates and livestock and as a powerful hunting dog. As a Guard dog it defended and protected the cattle ranches and herded livestock in the Minas Gerais region of Brazil against attacks by jaguars and cattle thieves.

Its impressive skills as a hunter enabled the Fila to track its quarry, such as pumas, jaguars and the peccary (a New World pig) and then hold down the prey until the human hunter arrived. The Fila Brasileiro fell into decline and was on the point of extinction until the late 1940's when a group of Brazilian dog breeders referred to as the Paulistas (inhabitants of the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil) worked on protecting and reviving the Fila Brasileiro breed. In 1946 the Paulistas, headed by Dr. Paulo Santos Cruz, established the standard for the breed. The Fila Brasileiro is recognised by the Brazilian Confederation Kennel Club (CBKC) and the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI).
