Entlebucher Mountain Dog History and Origin: The country of origin of the Entlebucher Mountain Dogs was in Switzerland and its forbears date back to the Roman Empire over 2000 years ago. The ancestors of the Entlebucher Mountain Dogs were believed to be molosser-type dogs that were used as watchdogs and herding dogs for the Romans to protect and control livestock. The Romans conquered Switzerland in the 2nd century BC and Roman dogs were interbred with local cattle dogs and sheepdogs in Switzerland.

These ancient dogs were called 'Sennenhund' in reference to people called Senn or Senner, the names given to the Swiss alpine herdsmen. There were four, common Sennenhund breeds in Switzerland: The Berner Sennenhund (Bernese Mountain Dog), the Grosser Schweizer Sennenhund (Greater Swiss Mountain Dog), the Appenzeller Sennenhund (Appenzeller) and, of course, the Entlebucher Sennenhund (Entlebucher Mountain Dog).

The 'Entlebucher Sennenhund' were the Mountain Dogs that were found across Entlebuch in the canton (region) of Lucerne in Switzerland. The Entlebucher was the smallest of the Swiss mountain dogs and used on farms and as a herder of livestock in the pastoralist societies of the Swiss Alps. The herds of livestock moved by the herdsmen and the Entlebucher included large flocks of sheep, as well as cattle, goats and pigs. The animals were moved around according to the season. Livestock was moved from the higher pastures in summer to the lower valleys in winter (this seasonal movement is known as the Transhumance). The products of transhumance herds and flocks that were herded by the Entlebucher were cheese, milk, butter, cream and yogurt.

The plight of the Entlebucher came to the attention of an influential Swiss professor called Albert Heim (1849 – 1937) who began work to preserve and promote the breed. WW1 (1914 - 1918) broke out and the breeding program was delayed and the first Entlebucher breed club was not established until 1926.
