Vizsla Breed Group and Dog Type - Sporting Dog Group (AKC:1943): The Vizsla is one of the many breeds of dogs that belong to the Sporting Dog Group (AKC:1943). There are two types of Vizsla the original short-haired variety, also known as the Hungarian Pointer, and the sturdier, wire-haired Vizsla, which was developed in the 1930s.

Origin of the name: The origin of the name "Vizsla" derives from the Hungarian word meaning "pointer". Also refer to the Wirehaired Vizsla.

Vizsla History and Origin: The country of origin of the Vizsla breed was in Hungary and the ancestors of the breed were the hunting dogs that were used by the Magyar tribes in the "land of the Huns". The Magyars ruled a vast territory in Hungary under Attila the Hun (406–453). Stone carvings dating back over 1,000 years show Magyar tribes hunting with falcons and dogs that closely resembled the Vizsla. The Vizsla was used by the Csikos, the mounted horse-herdsman, for hunting on flat, open country of the Great Hungarian Plain. The courageous Vizsla exhibited the agility, caution and alertness required to hunt a variety of dangerous animals including the wolves, wild cats, jackals, the curly-haired wild boar and the scimitar-horned cattle (called the Hungarian Steppe cattle).

The versatile Vizsla was trained to point and retrieve on both land and water The magnificent Vizsla became the favorite hunting dog of the Hungarian aristocracy and warlords who closely guarded the breed and kept the bloodlines pure. The Vizsla was known as the "Gift of Kings" and presented only to royalty and honored guests, retaining the exclusivity of the breed. The jealously guarded Vizsla nearly reached the point of extinction but after World War II (1939 - 1945) Hungarian emigrants brought the Vizsla dog to western Europe and the United States as an excellent Gun Dog (Bird Dog). The Vizsla breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1960.
