Sussex Spaniel Breed Group and Dog Type - Sporting Dog Group (AKC:1884): The Sussex Spaniel is one of the many breeds of dogs that belong to the Sporting Dog Group (AKC:1884).

Origin of the name: The name "Sussex Spaniel" derives from the dogs place of origin in Sussex a county in the south of England. The word 'spaniel' originated in Spain and referred to a surname meaning "Spaniard". It was then transferred as a name for a breed of dog supposedly of Spanish origin.

Other names for the Sussex Spaniel: The Sussex Spaniel is known by the nickname of the "Flusher". Other names for this breed of dog include the Spanial and the Hastings Spaniel. The nickname "Flusher" reflects the dogs ability to flush, or startle, game out of cover. The nickname "Hastings Spaniel" is a reference to a town on the coast of Sussex.

Sussex Spaniel History and Origin: The country of origin of the Sussex Spaniel breed was in United Kingdom (England) during the 1800's. A wealthy Englishman named Augustus Elliott Fuller (1777-1857) of the Rosehill estate in Isfield, East Sussex is credited with developing the breed as a Gun Dog (Bird Dog). Unlike other gun dogs, the Sussex Spaniel barked when working. The Sussex Spaniel and Cocker   Spaniel were  cross bred to produce the Field Spaniel.

One of the earliest descriptions of the Sussex Spaniel was in the book "House Dogs and Sporting Dogs", published in 1861 by the Englishman John Meyrick, who described the breed as a Springer with a "general resemblance to the Clumber in height and shape". Merrick also stated that the head of the Sussex Spaniel was lighter and due to his coloring "his whole appearance is handsomer". The Sussex Spaniel was exported to the United States as a Bird Dog and was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1884.
