Origin of the name: The origin of the name "Russian Bear Dog" derives from its country of origin in Russia and conveys the strength of a dog that had the ability to attack bears.

Russian Bear Dog History and Origin: The country of origin of the Russian Bear Dogs breed was in Russia and descended from molosser,  mastiffs and large shepherd dogs that had existed from times immemorial. Information about the Russian Bear Dog is scarce and conflicting but we believe that it is probable that the Russian Laika, the Karelian Bear Dog and the Caucasian Shepherd Dog (Ovcharka) also played a part in its development. As soon as WW2 (1939 - 1945) ended the Cold War (1945 - 1991) began, primarily between Russia and America.

The Central School of Military Dog Breeding (called the "Red Star" kennel) was established by the USSR government at the beginning of the Cold War to develop strong Soviet dog breeds. An order was issued to develop breeds of large, powerful dogs for guarding military and strategic positions. Various breeds of dogs were crossed and the Russian Bear Dog was finally developed. The Russian Bear Dog together with other Soviet breeds were used as prison dogs, guarding prisoners at the Soviet Gulag forced labor camps that operated until the early 1960's. Russian Bear Dogs were also used as Soviet guards at the Berlin Wall (August 1961 - November 9, 1989). The Russian Bear Dog were also used in some of the Soviet satellite nations as fighting dogs.
