Origin of the name: The origin of the name "New Guinea Singing Dog" derives from it place of origin in New Guinea, a large island in the South West Pacific region, north of Australia. "Singing" relates to its distinctive vocal ability to vary the pitch of its baying howl.

New Guinea Singing Dog - Wild Sighthound: The New Guinea Singing Dog is a Wild Sighthound, its quarry is small game and birds, including Birds of Paradise and parrots native to New Guinea.

New Guinea Singing Dog History and Origin: The New Guinea Singing Dog breed was found in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, dates back to antiquity between 10,000 and 15,000 years ago and is genetically very close to the Australian dingo. The New Guinea Singing Dog lives feral or in semi-domesticated existence and is not recommended as a pet. The New Guinea Singing Dog are descended from the same prehistoric dog ancestor as domesticated dogs, the gray wolf. It is a rare breed, described as a Pariah or Primitive dog.

New Guinea Singing Dogs History: The New Guinea Singing Dogs were brought to the attention of the world in 1957 when Mr. Ellis Troughton, who was the Curator of Mammals for the Australian Museum, visited New Guinea to collect native mammals that lived on the island. Among the animals he found were a pair of New Guinea Singing Dogs. Mr. Troughton believed the New Guinea Singing Dogs were a distinct species and sent the dogs to Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney, Australia. Troughton named the breed 'Canis hallstromi' after Sir Edward Hallstrom. (Sir Edward Hallstrom (1886 – 1970) was a famous Australian philanthropist who had directed much of his fortune to the Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney, Australia).

In the 1970's another pair of New Guinea Singing Dogs were captured in  the Eipomak Valley part of Indonesia. The dogs bred in captivity and specimens of New Guinea Singing Dogs were sent to zoos across Europe and America. The first New Guinea Singing Dog to reach the United States was in 1958 when a female was sent to the San Diego Zoo. In 1969 the New Guinea Singing Dog was reclassified as a subspecies of the dingo group, Canis familiaris dingo or Canis lupus dingo. New Guinea Singing Dogs are considered to be the world's rarest dogs and are rarely kept as pets.
