Origin of the name Flat Coated Retriever: The origin of the name "Flat Coated Retriever" derives from the description of the dog's flat coat and its ability as a retriever. The retriever dogs hunt by air scent and were trained to pick up, or retrieve small game or waterfowl and return the quarry to the Hunter.

Flat Coated Retriever History and Origin: The country of origin of the Flat Coated Retriever breed was in United Kingdom during the mid 1800's. The ancestor of the Flat Coated Retriever was the, now extinct, St. John's water dog and the Labrador Retriever that were bred in Canada during the early 1800's. Both of these breeds were natural water-dogs with coats that would protect the dog from any ill effects of frequent immersion in water. A black-coated dog  was introduced into England from Labrador and this became the forbear of the Flat Coated Retriever. The soft-mouthed, substantial and intelligent Flat Coated Retriever was a great success retrieving grouse and partridge and waterfowl without damaging the game. Initially the coats of the dogs were decidedly 'wavy' and were in fact named 'Wavy-coated retrievers'.

The Flat Coated Retriever was traditionally described as showing "power without lumber and raciness without weediness". The coat is dense, fine, glossy, and as flat as possible and resilient to the touch. Mr. Sewallis Evelyn Shirley, best known as the founder of England's Kennel Club,  is credited with being the first to develop the flatter coated types of retrievers.  The breed was introduced at the Cremorne dog show in 1873 but was put into the same class as the Curly Coated Retriever.  In 1880 a dog breeder named Mr. G. Thorpe Bartram produced a dog called "Zelstone" which was the first to have a really flat straight coat. Separate classes for two types of retrievers were introduced in 1890. The Flat-Coated Retriever was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1915.
