Other names for the Finnish Lapphund: The Finnish Lapphund is known by the nickname of the "Lappie". Other names for this breed of dog include the Finse lappenhond and Lapinkoira. The name 'Lapinkoira' is derived from the Finnish words 'Lapin' meaning "from Lapland" and 'Koira' meaning "Dog".

Origin of the name: The origin of the name "Finnish Lapphund" derives from its country of origin in Finland. The word 'Lapphund' means 'Lapland dog'. Lapland is the most northernmost region in Finland, bordering Sweden, Norway, Russia and the Baltic Sea. Lapland is known for its vast sub arctic wilderness and is the homeland of the indigenous Sami people.

Finnish Lapphund History and Origin: The nomadic Sami people, aka Sames meaning Laplanders, inhabit Lapland and adjacent areas of northern Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia. Reindeer herding, hunting and fishing has been the basis of the Sami economy up to the modern times. The ancient Nordic Spitz type of dogs have been used by the Sami people to help with all of these tasks, and the dogs became particularly adept at reindeer herding. Cave drawings and Archaeological excavations in Lapland have unearthed remains of similar dogs that date back to the ancient world.

The Sami dogs inherited the characteristics of the Spitz types of dogs with a wolf-like appearance, pointed muzzle and ears, a thick, dense coat  with a high carried tail that curled up and over the dog's back. The Finnish Lapphund descended from these ancient Sami dogs. The first of these dogs were imported to the United States by Scandinavian immigrants  during the period in US history known as the Great Migration during the late 1800's.

Finnish Lapphund Modern History: The modern history of the Finnish Lapphund moved on and the breed was developed and afforded its name in the mid 1900's when it gained recognition by the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 1944. The Finnish Lapphund was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 2011 and enjoyed as a family-friendly pet and companion.
