Issues - Description of Dog Mange
The word Mange comes from the Middle French word mangene meaning
itching. It is caused by six varieties of minute parasitic mites
which affect domestic animals and sometimes people. The most
severe variety of canine dog mange is caused by the mite Sarcoptes
scabiei, which also causes human scabies. It appears in the form
of a variety of persistent contagious skin diseases characterized
by frantic itching.

Problems - Symptoms of Dog Mange
Canine Dog Mange is marked by inflammation, frantic itching,
thickening of the skin, and hair loss.
Demodectic
Mange - also known as Red
Mange
The Dog Mange called Demodectic mange is caused by Demodex canis,
a minute size, cigar shaped mite that affects puppies from three
to 12 months old. This type of canine dog mange causes itching,
the skin is reddened and scaly, and hair loss occurs in circular
patches resembling ‘ringworm.’ The face and front legs are most
commonly affected. The treatment includes dips of an insecticide
called Mitaban preceded by hair clipping and benzoyl peroxide
shampoo
Cheyletiella Mange - also known as
Walking Dandruff
The Dog Mange called Cheyletiella mange also known as
Walking Dandruff. It affects puppies and is caused by a large
reddish mite. This mange is identified by the dandruff dusting
that occurs over the dog's head, neck, and back. The treatment is
an insecticide dip.
Sarcoptic
Mange also known as Scabies
The Dog Mange called Sarcoptic mange is also known as Scabies. It
is caused by a microscopic mite. Sarcoptic mange is contagious to
both canines and people. Sarcoptic mange causes intense itching,
loss of hair and crusting of the skin. A dog’s ears, front legs,
chest and abdomen are most often affected by this particular type
of mange. The treatment usually consists of weekly injections of
Ivermectin for up to four weeks.
