Origin of the name: The origin of the name "Beauceron" derives from its place of origin in the Beauce region of central France.

Beauceron History and Origin: The country of origin of the Beauceron breed was in France during the 1500's as a herding and guard dog from the flatlands of the Beauce region in central France. This brave dog is the largest of all the French herding dogs and was bred to perform multiple duties as a farm dog but was also trained as a hunting dog to track stag, deer, wild boar and bears. During the 1600's French colonists took their Beauceron hunting dogs to the Louisiana colony in the New World. The Beauceron is believed to be one of the ancestors of the Catahoula Leopard Dog.

A French priest called Abe Rosier, who was closely associated with the farmers in his parish, was the first to describe the 'Berger de la Beauce' in an article published in 1809 about French herding dogs detailing the differences between the short haired Beauceron and the longer haired Berger de la Brie, now known as the Briard. The first Beauceron was shown at the Paris dog show (L' Exposition Universelle de 1878) and the breed was exported to other countries in Europe and quite a few years later to the United States. The Beauceron was used as a messenger by the French army during both WWI (1914 - 1918) and WW2 (1939 - 1945). The Beauceron demonstrated the ability to follow commands without hesitation were also trained to detect mines and support commando operations.

Beauceron Modern History: The modern history of the Beauceron moved on and the breed is now used as a Hunting, Watchdog, Herding and popular Guard Dog in France. The Beauceron was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 2007.

Beauceron Height: The Beauceron breed is classified as a Medium to Large-sized sized dog. The height to the shoulder of a male dog is 66 - 71 cm. The height to the shoulder of a female dog is 64 - 66 cm.
