Origin of the name: The origin of the name "Bandogge" derives from the Middle English Saxon word "banda" meaning 'leash or chain' and the word "dogge" meaning 'dog' indicating that the animal was kept tied or chained up during the day and let loose at night. A dog that is tied up increases the aggressiveness of the dog.

Bandogge History and Origin: The Bandogge, or Irish Mastiff, is often described as a Molosser dog that shares a common ancestry with the large, powerful dogs of antiquity including the, now extinct, Alaunt breed. The country of origin of the Bandogge breed was in Ireland during the Middle Ages where it was bred to hunt large and small game, especially wolves and stag. The Bandogge was developed by crossing the English Mastiff with an Irish Wolfhound.

Bandogge History- American Bandogge: The American Bandogge was a hybrid dog that was developed in the 1960's by an American vet called John Swinford. The American Canine Hybrid Club recognizes the American Bulldog crossed with a Mastiff as an American Bandogge.
